What does par mean in the Icelandic word ladder?
Par is the smallest possible number of steps between the starting word and the target. It is calculated in advance by searching for the shortest path through every Icelandic word of that length, so it is a fact about the puzzle rather than an estimate. If you match par, no shorter route exists.
Each step changes exactly one letter and the result must be a real Icelandic word. All the words in a chain are the same length, so you never add or remove a letter. You may take a longer route and the puzzle still counts as solved, it simply is not perfect.
