- Green = right letter, right spot.
- Yellow = right letter, wrong spot.
- Grey = the letter is not in the word.
- Six tries; a new word every day.
Icelandic letters in Wordle
The Icelandic alphabet has 32 letters and includes letters English lacks: á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, þ (thorn), æ, ð (eth) and ö, with no c, q, w or z. In the games these accented letters count as their own distinct letters. So á and a (or ö and o) are different tiles.
Tips for learners
- Open with a vowel-rich word to find the vowels fast.
- A grey 'a' does not rule out 'á' — the special vowels are separate.
- Common endings like -ur, -inn and -ana appear a lot.
Why is Icelandic Wordle harder than the English one?
The Icelandic alphabet has 32 letters and the accented ones are separate letters, not variants. Á is not A, Í is not I and Ý is not Y, so a grey A tells you nothing about whether Á is in the word. That alone makes the search space much wider than in English, and familiar English openers like ADIEU or CRANE waste most of their information here.
Guesses are checked against a list of 27,301 five letter Icelandic word forms taken from the Database of Icelandic Morphology (BÍN) at the Árni Magnússon Institute, so inflected forms count as valid guesses even when they are not the answer of the day. A good opening word for Icelandic covers the common consonants R, N, S and T together with two unaccented vowels, and saves the accented letters for later once the shape of the word is clearer. One puzzle a day, the same for everyone, six attempts, free to play.
