Icelandic Strands — Strendur
Strendur is the Icelandic version of Strands: every day has a theme, and you find the themed words plus the special spangram hidden in a letter grid.
How to play
- Read the day's theme.
- Drag across letters to form themed words.
- Find the spangram — a word that spans the grid and ties into the theme.
- Use hints if you get stuck.
Why it helps learners
Strands connects a theme to a set of related Icelandic words, so you learn vocabulary in meaningful groups.
How does the Icelandic Strands puzzle work?
Every grid has one key word that describes the theme and stretches across the grid between opposite edges. It is not on the theme list, and it usually reveals itself once the other words are found and only a few letters remain. Correct theme words lock in blue and the key word locks in gold.
Each square belongs to exactly one word, which is what makes the endgame solvable by elimination rather than guesswork: a letter already used cannot appear in anything else. Words run between adjacent squares including diagonals, and the path may bend as often as it likes, so a word is not a straight line the way it is in a word search. All ten accented Icelandic letters are distinct squares, so Ö is never found by looking for O. The bank holds 120 puzzles and one appears each day.
